YOM HA'ATZMAUT PHOTOS NOW ONLINE

Photos of Yom Ha’atzmaut are now on Jewish Federation’s Facebook page.

More than 1,500 people attended this year’s Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration, and it is one we won’t soon forget. The evening began with the formal closing of Yom HaZikaron and a moment of silence for fallen Israeli soldiers and civilians killed in wars and terror attacks. We also remembered those killed and injured earlier that day in the bombings at the Boston Marathon.

Then we transitioned into a high-energy celebration starting with the JCC Festival Ha'Rikud Israeli dancers and a live performance by local youths called “That’s Canada! That’s Israel!” Written by long-time Yom Ha’atzmaut committee members, Jonathan Berkowitz and Heather Glassman Berkowitz, it was a lovingly humourous take on both countries’ quirky differences and, of course, their many similarities. TEEN BULLYING TO BE DISCUSSED AT PHILOSOPHER'S CAFE

Over the past few years, there have been a number of high profile incidents involving youth and bullying, including the recent and very tragic cases of Amanda Todd and Rehtaeh Parsons. Despite growing awareness of the issues, prevention programs in schools, and community education for parents and youths, teen bullying remains a significant concern. MORE
