SURREY MAYOR’S MISSION TO ISRAEL A GREAT SUCCESS

Surrey’s mayor, Dianne Watts, recently returned from a trade mission to Israel to discuss partnership possibilities with Israeli organizations. The mission, led by the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), included several business, healthcare and academic leaders from the Fraser Health Authority, the University of British Columbia Medical School, Simon Fraser University and Kwantlen Polytechnic University. During the busy six-day trip, the team attended more than 25 business meetings, political briefings and tours of Important Israeli historic and contemporary sites, and visited Israel’s Northern border with Syria in the Golan Heights.

The trade mission was initiated by Darren Mackoff, a regional director for CIJA, which works on behalf of Jewish Federations across Canada to advocate for Israel and Jewish issues. Darren pitched the trip to Surrey city officials, convincing them that a visit to the “Start-Up Nation” would benefit both the mayor and the people of Surrey in the ongoing development of Surrey’s new Innovation Boulevard—one square mile between Simon Fraser University and Surrey Memorial Hospital devoted to cutting edge health care research and technology.
