VOLUNTEER PROFILE— GEOFFREY DRUKER AND THE YOM HAZIKARON COMMITTEE

If you ask about Geoffrey Druker’s involvement in Vancouver’s Yom Hazikaron ceremony, the annual remembrance of Israeli fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism, you might hear, “In Vancouver, Geoffrey Druker is Yom Hazikaron.” Geoffrey has been chairing the local Yom Hazikaron ceremony for over 20 years—not because he won’t give up his post, but because no one can imagine anyone else in his place.
The Yom Hazikaron Ceremony
Observed the day before Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, Yom Hazikaron is as solemn as Yom Ha’atzmaut is joyous. In Vancouver, the ceremony draws about 400 people and follows a typical Israeli Yom Hazikaron ceremony format, which includes poems, readings, songs and a moment of silence. “It’s a community hug and support for the families in our community who have lost family and friends,” says Geoffrey.
